MARFORESTS

MARine FOrest RESToration at Scale

The MARFORESTS project is a partnership between Seaforester, Seaweed Solutions, Instituto Politécnico de Leiria and the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research. It aims to develop a platform solution for remediation, stabilisation and restoration of seaweed forests at scale. Substrate-based restoration techniques will be deployed on the seabed and from the surface to act as habitat for marine organisms, while new quicklime treatment techniques will be developed for targeting urchin barrens. Improved seed and nursery techniques will also be developed to improve productivity and quality for producing seed stock for restoration projects. This project spans restoration trials in seaweed forests in Portugal to northern Norway and will develop a best-practice manual for scaling this further.
